HAVE YE NOT READ

Bro. James Watkins spoke powerfully about this statement that was made by Jesus on the occasion of questions that were being put to Jesus concerning marriage and divorce.  It caused me to wonder how often that our Lord made this statement. The occasion that was referred to earlier is found in Matthew 19:3-6. ÒThe Pharisees also came unto him, tempting him, and saying unto him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause? And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh? Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.Ó  Today it seems that man wants to consult everything and everyone but GodÕs word.  Have ye not read means for us to look at GodÕs word and see what it says about a particular subject.  It does not matter what all these others sources may say.  What does the word of God say?  ÒHave ye not readÉÓ

When Jesus was discussing the resurrection of the dead he used these words. ÒBut as touching the resurrection of the dead, have ye not read that which was spoken unto you by God, saying, I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.Ó(Matthew 22:31,32).  Jesus had made the statement earlier in this discussion, ÒYou are mistaken, not understanding the Scriptures nor the power of God.Ó (v.29).  Again, the important thing to do if you want to know about the resurrection is to consult GodÕs word and see what it says.  Read the Bible.  Do not be deceived or mistaken about the facts concerning the important subject of the resurrection.

Jesus used the statement in reference to himself and the church in Mark 12:10,11. ÒAnd have ye not read this scripture; The stone which the builders rejected is become the head of the corner: This was the LordÕs doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes?Ó You want to know about the church, about the chief cornerstone, see what GodÕs word says.  Òhave ye not readÉÓ Spend some time reading and study the Bible every day.

Lifted Above the Storm

No doubt everyone knows that the national symbol of our great country is the eagle. There are many interesting references to the eagle in the Bible. The swiftness of the eagle (Deut. 28:49; Prov. 23:5; Jer. 48:40; 4:13; Hab. 1:8), their habit of building their nests in high places (Jer. 14:16}, and their strong wings (Ezek. 17:3). Titus and his armies wore the emblem of eagles on their helmets (Matt. 24:28; Lk. 17:37).

GodÕs Protection

It was the third month after the children of Israel had escaped from the hand of the Egyptians that they came to Mount Sinai where God gave Moses the ten commandment law. This preceded their entrance into the wilderness of Sinai to begin their forty years of wandering.

God reminded Moses, and desired that he tell the same unto the children of Israel, ÒYe have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and how I bare you on eaglesÕ wings, and brought you unto myself (Ex. 19:4). As an eagle stirs up her nest to compel her young to leave it and learn to fly, as she broods over them to warm and protect them, and bears them upon her wings when tired and about to fail, so God disturbed the Israelites in Egypt to force them to leave, protected them from danger, and bore them Òon his pinions,Ó the outer most joint of a birds wings (Deut. 32:10-11). He had brought them out to be a separate people unto Himself!

Christians, the Israel of God Today

ÒThose who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eaglesÓ (Isa. 40:31). The Israel of God today are those who have accepted the Son of God in faith, repentance, confession, and baptism (Rom. 2:28-29; Gal. 6:16). From both Jews and Gentiles we have been brought into ChristÕs one body as ÒAbrahamÕs seedÓ and Òheirs according to the promiseÓ (Gal. 3:26-29). We are separated from the world to be light and salt (Matt. 5:13- 16).

The church of Christ is the Òpillar and ground of the truthÓ (I Tim. 3:15). We must not forget our mission or our missionary efforts (Matt. 28:18-20). We must set our minds to do right even in the storms of life (Col. 3:1-2). It is said that the eagle knows when a storm is approaching before it comes. He flies to some high place and waits for the winds to come, then flies into the storm setting his mighty wings to carry him above the storm. When the storms of life come, as they will to each of us, we can, like the eagles with their mighty wings, be lifted above the storm.
