We studied I Peter 5 in our young adult Bible class Sunday morning. After Peter had talked about elders and their leadership, about the need for humility among all of GodÕs children, about GodÕs care for each of us, he talked about the devil. I see a contrast in verses seven and eight. ÒCasting all your care upon him; for he careth for you. Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:Ó God cares for you, but the devil wants to devour you. He wants to destroy your soul. It seems that one of the ways he was attempting this during the time Peter wrote was through suffering and persecution. Peter warns us to be sober, be vigilant. The word sober means more than refraining from strong drink, although it would certainly include that. It means to be Òsober-minded, watchful, to be calm and collected in spirit.Ó To be vigilant means to be watchful, to give strict attention to, be cautious.Ó The majority of times it is translated ÒwatchÓ in the New Testament. Take time to look at various references to the word ÒsoberÓ and the word Òwatch.Ó It helps us to understand why we need to be sober and watchful.
Our adversary the devil is seeking whom he may devour. An adversary is Òan opponent in a lawsuit, an enemy, an accuser. The word devil comes from the word ÒdiabolosÓ which means Òa slanderer, an adversary, an accuser.Ó John stated concerning the devil in the book of Revelation, ÒAnd the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with himÓ (Revelation 12:9). Also take time to read Job 1 and 2. He is certainly your enemy, your adversary, your accuser if you made the decision to walk in the way of the Lord. Satan wants to devour you. To devour is to Òdrink down, swallow down, to consume.Ó Peter says we must resist steadfast. We must take a stand against Satan. Sometimes we have to stand firm, as this situation indicates. Put on the whole armour of God and stand (Ephesians 6:10-19). There are times we need to flee as Joseph did Genesis 39. How do you resist the devil?

Tidings # 3/18/2010, House to House/Heart to Heart
Hold that CowÕs Tail!
My mother grew up as the youngest on a small farm in
middle Tennessee. They had chickens and cows, as well as other barnyard critters.
When she was four or five years old, my grandmother would take her along to do
the morning chores. There was always something for a little girl to do. She
gathered eggs in places only a little person could reach. And while Granny was
milking the cow, Granny told her, ÒHold that cowÕs tail!Ó My mother would gently hold the cowÕs
tail so it didnÕt get swished into GrannyÕs face and interrupt her pace in that
important work.
It all sounds humorous now, but there were some
valuable lessons to be learned. First, everyone, big or small, has a job to do.
Second, every job, small or big, is important. Third, everyone is valued and
needed. These concepts are especially true in the church of the Lord.
The church at Corinth did not understand these basic
principles. Some of the Corinthian brethren thought they must have visible,
ÒshowyÓ positions of service. Others functioned in somewhat menial positions
and thought their work was not as valuable.
The apostle Paul corrected these mistaken views when
he said, For the body does not consist of one member but of many. If the
foot should say, ÒBecause I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,Ó that
would not make it any less a part of the body. And if the ear should say,
ÒBecause I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,Ó that would not make it
any less a part of the body. If the whole body were an eye, where would be the
sense of hearing? If the whole body were an ear, where would be the sense of
smell? (1 Cor. 12:14-17).
The person who cleans the
building or prepares the LordÕs Supper is just as needful as the
person who publicly preaches,
teaches, or leads prayers. Paul made it abundantly clear that
everyone, big or small, has a
job to do in the well-functioning church, the body of Christ. Every job, small
or big, is equally important. Every member is valued and needed. Our aim, then,
is to find a role, a work, a service that honors our Lord, and seek out those
who are young or young in the faith and urge them to ÒHold that cowÕs tail!Ó
TodayÕs Verse: And whatever you do, in word or deed, do
everything in the name of the
Lord Jesus, giving thanks to
God the Father through him (Colossians
3:17).
